My sunlight

Clocks don’t create light: they move it. See where your light falls, depending on your town and your schedule. Calculated in your browser: nothing is sent.

Your typical schedule

“End of the day”: when you leave work or school. For a free day, use the same time as leaving home.

In Montréal, with your schedule, year-round daylight time would give you +222 hours more light while you are awake, every year.

Light while you are awake from wake-up to bedtime, per year 4,059 h 4,280 h
of which during your free time before leaving and after the day 788 h 1,079 h
of which sunshine after your day from the end of the day to bedtime 568 h 920 h
Evenings when the sun is already down when your day ends 61 days 0 days
Sunshine lost while you sleep per year 406 h 184 h
Mornings when you leave before sunrise mostly in December and January 29 days 124 days
Earliest sunset of the year 4:11 PM 5:11 PM
Earliest sunrise of the year 4:05 AM 5:05 AM

Compared with today (with clock changes), year-round daylight time adds 74 h of sunshine during your free time, mostly from November to March.

How it is calculated

  • “Light while you are awake”: the sun up between your wake-up and your bedtime. For Quebecers as a whole, using the sleep hours reported to Statistics Canada, see the calculation for all of Québec.
  • “Free time”: the sun up between your wake-up and leaving home, plus between the end of your day and bedtime.
  • Clear horizon, cloudless sky. Mountains, buildings and weather reduce the real light, equally under either system.
  • Twilight counts too. After sunset it stays light for about thirty minutes, and before sunrise too. These figures count only the sun above the horizon.
  • A daytime schedule, every day. The simulator applies your schedule every day of the year, with no weekends or holidays, and does not handle night schedules.
  • Mornings count. That is why the mornings when you leave before sunrise are shown too: that is what daylight time changes in the morning, mostly in December and January.
  • Special time zones. The Magdalen Islands and the Lower North Shore live on Atlantic time: for them, the calculation uses Eastern time and is only a comparison.

The same calculation, redone independently in the research folder, gives the same results. All the details are in the method.

Your sunlight, your voice.

MNAs will choose Québec’s time. Show them what it changes where you live: the letter includes your town’s figures.
